Microsoft Editor is an AI-powered intelligent writing assistant that helps bring out your best writer in more than 20 languages, whether you are writing a Word doc, composing an email message, or posting on a website like LinkedIn or Facebook. Editor underlines the issues it finds, allowing you to select the underlined word or phrase to accept or ignore the suggestion.
What is Microsoft Editor?
Editor is available as a browser extension for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. Editor features are accessible in Word and Outlook online apps, as well as the Word desktop software. This free service lets you nail the basics of grammar and spelling and makes you a better writer. Editor offers advanced grammar and style refinements like clarity, conciseness, formality, vocabulary suggestions, and more.
Editor is included as part of your Stonehill Microsoft 365 account.
What are some features of Editor?
Some features of Microsoft Editor include:
- Editor score - Editor scores your document based on the number and type of suggestions it has. Accept or ignore them to reach 100%.
- Formality level - From business letters to party invites, Editor can help. Choose a formality level to get suggestions that fit your style.
- Corrections - Get essential spelling and grammar suggestions to be sure you're putting your best foot forward.
- Refinements - Select Clarity, Conciseness, or another Refinement category to get ideas for how to improve your writing.
- Similarity checking - Editor scans the web to find content that's like yours, so you can add citations where needed.
- Text predictions - Let Editor boost your productivity by predicting text quickly and accurately. Accept the predictions just by tabbing.
- Rewrite anything - Just right-click in a sentence, select Rewrite suggestions, and Editor will rewrite part or all of it for you.
What is the Editor browser extension?
As a browser extension in Edge or Chrome, Editor helps you compose and correct Outlook and Gmail messages, social media posts, and anything you write on the web. The Editor browser extension checks for grammar and spelling mistakes and makes suggestions for refining your writing, like addressing passive voice or wordiness. Clicking an underlined word to see a list of suggested revisions.
The Editor extension isn’t compatible with every site on the web. For example, it’s compatible with WordPress but not OneDrive. So, editing a Word doc in OneDrive is only possible by using the native Editor functionality in Microsoft 365.

How does Editor work?
Once you start typing in Word, Microsoft Editor will check your text in real-time. It underlines the text (either with (1) a dashed line or (2) a solid line) that may need correcting. By clicking the underlined text, a brief description of the error and a suggestion will appear. Clicking the suggested word will replace the error in your text.
How does Editor work in Word for the web?
Microsoft Editor runs in Word for the web to analyze your document and offer suggestions for spelling, grammar, and stylistic issues. Offering suggestions for refinements, like making sentences more concise, choosing simpler words, or writing with more formality. Look for the Editor button on the Home tab.

Where is Editor in Word for Microsoft 365 in Windows?
Editor has been updated in the Windows version of Word for Microsoft 365 to check for more issues than it did in Word 2016 and 2019. The updated user interface is more closely aligned to Word for the web. Look for the Editor button on the Home tab. If do not have the Editor button, press the F7 button on your keyboard to open Editor in Word.
Clicking this option will open the Editor pane on the right-hand side of the window. Here, you’ll see an overall score of your content based on Editor’s algorithm, along with other stats like readability and the amount of time it takes to read your content.
Editor will tell you how many instances of each issue appear in the content. While any item under Refinements can be considered as suggestions, items under Corrections are must-fix issues.
By clicking an item in a menu, the tool will bring you to the first instance of that issue in the text. From there, you can either accept or ignore Editor’s suggestion.

Is Editor available in Outlook?
Yes, Editor is available in Outlook online only. It is not available for the Outlook desktop application yet. Quickly correct spelling and grammar, adding polish to an important email to a colleague or peer. Get extra help as Editor suggests refinements for clarity, conciseness, inclusive language.

Editor is not available for Word for Microsoft 365 on the Mac or as a browser extension. You can access Editor online features on Word and Outlook online only.
