Multi-factor authentication (MFA) requires the use of more than one verification method and adds a second layer of security to user sign-ins. By using additional verification methods, multi-factor authentication allows you to ‘trust’ a device after verifying your login. This means that even if a malicious actor already knows your password, they can't sign into your account without your approval.
Getting a new phone? - Before you wipe or get rid of your old phone, be sure to
follow these steps to set up your new one so you don't get locked out of your account. If you got a new phone and you've already wiped or gotten rid of your old one before setting MFA up on the new one, you'll need to present a photo ID to the
Service Desk either in-person or via video call to get you back into your account.
Setting up MFA for the first time
Note: We strongly recommend accessing your account and proceeding through the following steps on a computer, rather than your smartphone, so that you can easily use your smartphone to scan the QR code presented during setup.
While you can do this process entirely on your smartphone, it's significantly faster and easier to sign in on a computer, so you can separately use your phone to set up the Authenticator app.
When signing into your Stonehill account (such as myHill) for the very first time, or otherwise when prompted after entering your password, you will arrive at a screen that says "More Information is Required".
Click Next and you will see this screen:
Leaving this screen up on your computer, follow the instructions by downloading and installing the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone.
Note: It is important to follow the instructions on the screen as they are presented and do not skip ahead.
If you tap "Sign in" instead of "Scan QR code" when adding your account to the app, you may put yourself in a loop. (If this happens, re-install the app, and begin again with a new QR code.)
The QR codes presented are one-time use, and they will time out if left sitting for too long, requiring you to go back and generate a new one.
Follow these instructions in the order presented, and everything will work as expected.
Once the Authenticator app is installed on your phone, go back to the setup screen on your computer and click Next. You will see this screen:
Open the Authenticator app you just downloaded on your phone, and when adding an account, select Work or school.
At the following screen, tap Scan QR Code. Do not tap Sign In.
Back on your computer, click Next. You should be presented with a QR code to scan:
Using your phone, scan the QR code with the Authenticator app.
Once you've scanned the QR code, click Next on your computer. The next screen will display a code:
When it does, your Authenticator app on your phone will ask for a code and whether you are trying to sign in. Enter the code presented on your computer into the screen on your phone, and tap Yes.
That’s it! You have verified and trusted your first device. You can now use the Authenticator app to sign in, unlock your account, reset your password, and it will continue to work even if you get a new phone number (e.g. traveling/studying abroad with an international SIM card; etc).
