Body
Panopto allows you to record a lecture in a single take while capturing your PowerPoint.
However, some instructors prefer the flexibility of recording narration slide-by-slide in PowerPoint. This workflow allows you to record and revise individual slides as needed before publishing the completed presentation through Panopto.
Table of Contents

Before You Start
-
Test your microphone before recording an entire presentation. A quick microphone test recording can save significant rework later.
-
Recording features may vary slightly depending on your version of Microsoft PowerPoint and whether you are a Windows or Mac user.
-
Plan for processing time. Estimated time varies based on presentation length and recording style. For many instructors, a 10–15 slide presentation may take 30–60 minutes or more to record, export, upload, and review.
-
Use a headset or external microphone for clearer audio than your computer's built-in microphone.

Tips for Recording
- Keep videos concise whenever possible (e.g., 10–15 minutes per topic).
- Use a quality microphone for improved audio clarity.
- Preview the exported MP4 before uploading.
- Use descriptive file names (for example: Week 3 Lecture on Cell Division, instead of BIO101_Module3_CellDivision.mp4).
- Upload videos well before students need access.
- Review captions for accuracy before publishing.
- After publishing, open the Canvas page yourself and confirm the video plays correctly. If it says the video is processing, check back in an hour. You will get an email notification when the video has fully rendered in Panopto.
- Panopto automatically generates captions after processing is complete. Before publishing, review and correct captions for accuracy. Automatic captions frequently contain errors with names, technical terminology, discipline-specific vocabulary, and acronyms. See Closed Captions in Panopto (Stonehill IT Knowledge Base) for how to review and edit captions.
- Do NOT upload an mp4 file directly to Canvas for accessibility & course storage related reasons.
