Summary

Minimum recommended specifications for student-owned laptops being used for coursework.

Mac or PC?

Our core technology services, like Canvas and the wireless network, support both platforms. Student computers currently fall around 40% Windows and 60% Mac OS. The Business School requires that students purchase a Windows PC laptop. Students who major in Graphic Design may prefer a Mac since most of their courses use labs with Mac computers, though this is not required. Specific questions about curriculum requirements should be discussed with the Chairperson of the academic department or their designee.

Important note: When setting up a newly-purchased Windows computer, Microsoft will guide you to log into the computer with a Microsoft account. It is crucial that you do not use your Stonehill Microsoft account to set up or sign into a personal computer. Doing so will bind your user account on your computer with your Stonehill account, which is deleted shortly after graduation. This will leave you with limited options for managing that account, and potential data loss should the account become locked for any reason.

Instead, create a separate, personal Microsoft account using an existing personal email address (or create a new one for this purpose). This will still allow you to activate and use your M365 software (Word/Excel/PowerPoint etc) with your Stonehill account while you remain at the College, as well as keep you in control after you graduate.

Attention Business Majors:

The Business School requires that students purchase a Windows PC. There are software applications in many classes that will only run on a computer running the Windows operating system. Please visit the laptop requirement page for more details.

Software

Students are licensed to download Microsoft 365 on up to 5 devices, providing full versions of Office on PCs and Macs and mobile applications on iPhones, iPads, and Android phones while they are enrolled at Stonehill College. In addition, students have access to Office in all computer labs and classrooms as well as the Office web applications through their email service.
