Streaming TV FAQs

There are many different options for streaming content on campus. Stonehill’s wireless and wired networks support all streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and more. The following FAQs will help you learn more about how to stream your home subscription services while living here on campus.

Can I stream content from my home cable TV provider?

In most cases, yes. Major TV providers such as Xfinity, Verizon Fios, and Spectrum let you watch live and on-demand TV through their website or mobile app by signing in with your account. Which channels you can watch away from home varies by provider and by individual network agreements, so not every channel will be available at Stonehill. Check your provider’s streaming or “TV Everywhere” support page for specifics, such as Xfinity’s TV streaming support page or Verizon’s TV Everywhere page.

Can I use a streaming media player to watch my cable provider’s content?

Usually not directly. Cable provider streaming apps for media players such as Roku, Fire TV, and Apple TV are typically meant for home use only and will not work on the campus network. Instead, you can connect a computer or mobile device to a TV with an HDMI cable, or stream wirelessly to a device like Chromecast or Apple TV.

What if a channel isn’t available to stream outside my home network?

If a channel can’t be accessed through your home cable provider’s streaming service, you can often stream it directly from the network instead. Many networks let you watch live on their own website or app after signing in with your TV provider account. ESPN, NBC Sports, and Fox Sports are common examples.

How can I stream live sports?

Sports fans have a few options beyond a cable provider’s app. Many regional sports networks now offer their own direct streaming apps—for example, the New England Sports Network (NESN), home of Boston Red Sox and Bruins games, streams through NESN 360. You can sign in with a participating TV provider or buy a direct subscription, though NESN 360 is only available to viewers within New England (excluding Fairfield County, CT). Some live TV streaming services also carry regional sports networks like NESN, so check a service’s current lineup if a specific network matters to you. For nationally televised games, services such as Peacock (NBC) and Paramount+ (CBS) stream select live sports as well.

What other options are there for live TV?

Several live TV streaming services work well on Stonehill’s network and offer local channels, sports, news, and entertainment without a cable subscription. Options include YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, Fubo, and Philo. Channel lineups and prices change often, so compare current plans on each service’s site before subscribing.
