Chat

The Chat tool allows students and instructors to interact in real time in a course.  

• Any user in the course can participate in the chat and view ALL chat messages.  There is no private-chatting with this tool
• A user must be actively viewing the chat tool in a course to appear as online to others.  You can have the chat window open in background tab while you are viewing other tabs
• Enable the New Message Alerts slider to play an audio alert when a new message arrives and chat is not your active window
• Students cannot delete chat messages.  Instructors can delete by hovering over a message and clicking the Trash Can icon
• If you do not want users chatting in your course, you can disable the chat link in the course menu
• Some Safari versions may have issues with chat alerts.  You can avoid these errors by disabling cross-site tracking prevention when using Canvas
