Getting Started with Canvas for Students

If you are new to Canvas, this page will provide you with some essential resources to familiarize yourself with Canvas and participate in your Canvas courses.

Log in to Canvas

We have multiple ways for you to access Canvas. Please follow the steps below and find the best path for you. 

Log in via MyHill

  1. Access myHill at https://myhill.stonehill.edu
  2. Enter your Stonehill username and password. 
  3. Scroll down and click on the Canvas button under the Applications & Resources heading.

  4. You will then be directed to the Dashboard in Canvas. 

Log in via URL

  1. Access Canvas at https://stonehill.instructure.com/
  2. Enter your Stonehill username and password. 
  3. You will then be directed to the User Dashboard in Canvas. 

Note: We recommend bookmarking the URL for quick and easy access. 

Navigating Canvas

The Dashboard [1] is the main page on Canvas that consolidates essential information from all your courses. From there, you can see the following:

  • The Dashboard tab [2] on the left side links to the Dashboard, displaying Course Cards, which allow you to quickly access course sites or click course activity icons to view recent course-specific Announcements, Grades, Discussions, or Files.
  • The Courses [3] tab on the left side of the page shows the courses you have access to. 
  • The Calendar [4] tab on the left side of the page shows events and assignments for all your courses.
  • The Inbox [5] tab on the left side is a messaging tool used to communicate with a course, a group, an individual student, or a group of students.

  • The To Do and Coming Up [6] lists on the right side of the page shows upcoming assignments, assessments, and events, with links to read about them in further detail.
  • The Recent Feedback [7] list on the right side of the page displays recent feedback from instructors and peers, including grades.

Help with Canvas

24/7 Canvas Support

Report a problem or access user guides for Canvas by clicking Help [1] in the lower left corner of the page.

Start by clicking on Search the Canvas Guides [2] for information about features inside of Canvas.

Click on Chat with Canvas Support (Student) [3] for 24/7 chat support with an actual human!

The Canvas Student App

The Canvas Student app is free for students to access their Canvas course information directly from their mobile devices. This means that students will now have virtually anytime/anywhere access to courses, content, and communities. The Blackboard app is available for iOS and Android devices.

Whether you’re reading through a course document, catching up on a discussion, or scrolling through new activity in your stream – Canvas is all about learning on the go. The Canvas Mobile Users site has guides on all versions of the app for more information.

QR Code for Mobile App Log in

You can view a Canvas login QR code in your Canvas web browser. You can scan this QR code with your mobile device to log in to the Canvas Student app without entering your institution URL and user credentials.

  1. In Global Navigation, click the Account tab [1], then click the QR Code for Mobile Login link [2].

  2. To display your mobile login QR code, click the Proceed button.

  3. View your QR code. The QR code can be scanned from the login page of the Student app from an Android device or an iOS device.

Enroll in the Passport to Canvas Course

Embark on a learning journey, where you discover how to use Canvas as a student with the self-paced Passport to Canvas online course.

The course is organized into Modules. Each module focuses on one Canvas tool. You may move through the Modules in order or you can open only the Modules you would like to learn more about. Open a module by selecting the map links, or you can see a complete list of all module names by choosing the Modules link in the course navigation to the left.
