VoiceThread

VoiceThread is a replacement for text-only discussions that allow collaboration using video, audio, images, and text in an interactive slide show. 

You can assign students to watch and respond to content that you have created, or you can have them create their own. 

To create a VoiceThread in a module in your Canvas course:

1. In your desired course click the Modules link in the course menu.
2. Find the module where you want the link to appear and click the + button.
3. Select External Tool from the drop-down menu, choose VoiceThread from the list of tools, and click Add Item:
   
    
4. The next step is deciding what type of VoiceThread the link will be:
   

Assignment Builder:

If you'd like students to create, comment on, or watch one of your VoiceThreads as a graded assignment, choose Assignment Builder.

Decide what type of Assignment you'd like to create and click Continue:

 

Create:

1. Set the number of comments students must record on their own VoiceThread to 0, and minimum slides to 1.
2. Choose what comment types you'll allow.
3. We suggest you check the Enable threaded commenting option so students can reply directly to specific comments
4. Decide if you want students to be able to see each other's work.  If so, check the Allow students to see each other's submissions for this assignment
5. Set any other options as desired and click Continue.
6. Give the assignment a name and any instructions.  Enter a Start date, Due date, and Close date.  Choose how you want the score to display.
7. Click Publish.
8. You'll be brought back to the Canvas screen.  Click Add Item.

Comment:

1. You will see a selection of all of your VoiceThreads.  Select your desired VoiceThread and choose what comments you want to import with it: all comments, only my comments, or no comments.  If students have commented on this VoiceThread from a previous class, you should select only my comments or no comments.  Click Continue.
2. You can rename the VoiceThread or slide if desired. Click Continue.
3. Your VoiceThread will play in the window.  You can add a comment here if desired using the + button.  Click Continue when finished.
4. Set the minimum number of comments you want to require students to submit and what type of comments you'll allow.
5. We suggest you check the Enable Threaded commenting option so students can reply directly to specific comments.
6. Set any other options as desired and click Continue.
7. Give the assignment a name and any instructions.  Enter a Start date, Due date, and Close date.  Choose how you want the score to display.
8. Click Publish.
9. You'll be brought back to the Canvas screen.  Click Add Item.

Watch:

1. You will see a selection of all of your VoiceThreads.  Select your desired VoiceThread and choose what comments you want to import with it: all comments, only my comments, or no comments.  If students have commented on this VoiceThread from a previous class, you should select only my comments or no comments.  Click Continue.
2. You can rename the VoiceThread or slide if desired. Click Continue.
3. Your VoiceThread will play in the window.  You can add a comment here if desired using the + button.  Click Continue when finished.
4. Set your desired Playback and Permissions settings and click Continue.
5. Give the assignment a name and any instructions.  Enter a Start date, Due date, and Close date.
6. Click Publish.
7. You'll be brought back to the Canvas screen.  Click Add Item.

Reconnect Previous Assignment:

If you’ve accidentally deleted the link to an assignment, or you need to rebuild a new link to the same assignment, this option allows you to reconnect an assignment in VoiceThread to a link in a Canvas Module.  

A list of all VoiceThread assignments you have ever created in this course will be listed.  Those that are already setup and published will be blue, those that weren't fully setup will be yellow.  Choose the assignment you want to reconnect and click Publish.

Individual VoiceThread

If you'd like students to view or comment on an individual VoiceThread not as a graded activity, choose Individual VoiceThread​​​​​​​.

1. You will see a selection of all of your VoiceThreads.  Select your desired VoiceThread and click Continue.
2. You can rename the VoiceThread or slide if desired. Click Continue.
3. Your VoiceThread will play in the window.  You can add a comment here if desired using the + button.  Click Continue when finished.
4. Set your desired options.  We suggest you check the Enable Threaded commenting option so students can reply directly to specific comments.  Click Continue.
5. Give the activity a name and click Publish.
6. You'll be brought back to the Canvas screen.  Click Add Item​​​​​​​.

Course View

If you'd like a link that will show the students all VoiceThreads that are shared with this course, choose Course View.

1. Give the activity a name and click Publish.
2. You'll be brought back to the Canvas screen.  Click Add Item​​​​​​​.

VT Home Page

If you'd like a link that will show students all of their VoiceThreads from across all of their courses, choose VT Home Page.

1. Give the activity a name and click Publish.
2. You'll be brought back to the Canvas screen.  Click Add Item​​​​​​​.
