Akindi (Scantron Alternative)

Akindi is a software alternative to Scantron bubble sheet tests.  Akindi integrates with a Canvas course and loads the roster automatically.  You can then create answer keys and print out bubble sheets (on regular plain paper) for students to fill-out in class.  Collect the sheets and use the scan-to-email function on the printer to scan the answers and send them to yourself as a pdf.  The pdf is then uploaded into Akindi where it will be graded against your key.

  1. In the Course Navigation, click the Modules link.
  2. Find the desired module to hold the Akindi link and click the + button to add to that module.
  3. Select External Tool from the drop-down list, select Akindi, and click Add Item.

  4. The Akindi link can remain unpublished as students don't need to access it directly.  Click on the Akindi link.
  5. Click Launch Assessments.  This is your Akindi Dashboard.  You will see any courses you have linked to Akindi and the roster for the current course.
  6. Click Create Assessment in the top-right of the screen.

  7. Enter a Name for the assessment.
    1. Select a Layout: currently, there are three options: 50, 100, or 150 questions with A-E answer options. Select the smallest size that will accommodate your number of questions.
    2. If desired enable Multiple Versions.  You can create up to 6 different versions each with its own answer key.
    3. Enabling the Prefill Student Information box will print the sheets with the student names already filled, but you will have to then hand out sheets to specific students.  Leaving the option unchecked will allow you to pass out the sheets altogether and students will have to fill in their own ID's.
  8. Click Save & Continue.
  9. Fill in the answer key by clicking on the correct letter response for each question. If multiple versions are enabled, the version name will be listed in a drop-down menu at the top of the screen. Enable the Display Advanced Marking option to enable partial credit, or set a question as a bonus.  When finished click Continue.
  10. Click Print Bubble Sheets if ready or Back to Course.
  11. On the bubble sheets, the leading H of the student's ID will be automatically displayed, so students will fill-in just the numeric portion of their ID.  Also, if using multiple versions, ensure the tests are clearly marked with the version and have the student bubble in which version they are taking.
  12. After the assessment has been completed, use the scan-to-email function on any of the multifunction HP's on campus to email the pdf file to yourself.
  13. Return to the Akindi dashboard using the link you created in Step 3, and click the Upload Response Sheets button. Click Choose File and browse for the pdf file that you just scanned. Click Open, then Upload.
  14. Any issues that are detected with the scan will be presented to you, for example, if a student didn't bubble in their ID correctly, Akindi will try to offer a potential match to the sheet.  Once all issues have been resolved click View Results.
  15. Click Send Grades to Canvas to send the results to the Canvas Gradebook.  A new Assignment will be created, change the name and number of points if desired and click Export.   The Akindi Assignment will be added to the topmost Assignment group in Canvas.  Move it to a different group if needed.
