Streaming TV FAQs

There are many different options for streaming content on campus. Stonehill’s wireless and wired networks support all streaming services, including Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and more. The following FAQs will help you learn more about how to stream your home subscription services while living here on campus.

Can I stream content from my home cable TV provider?

In some cases, you can. Xfinity, Verizon, and Cox all provide methods for watching live TV over the internet using a web browser or mobile device. Not all channels will be available through these services when you are at Stonehill, but you can occasionally access the streams directly from content providers like NESN. Consult your cable TV provider for more details.

How does streaming TV work for Xfinity?

If you have a personal home Xfinity subscription, channels listed as “TV GO” through the streaming portal on your computer and the streaming mobile app on your smart phone or tablet will be accessible at Stonehill. To watch live TV, sign in at my.xfinity.com , click the tv icon at the top for Xfinity Stream, choose the LiveTV drop down and pick TVGo Channels.  The available channels include the local network channels as well as many popular sports, news, and entertainment channels.

Xfinity also provides home subscribers with access to view shows, movies, news, sports and more on over 80 network websites and apps.  For more information, check out Xfinity’s TV streaming support page

How does streaming TV work for Verizon?

Some Verizon FIOS channels can be accessed via the Verizon website and mobile app. Available channels which include national news, sports, and entertainment channels, can be filtered in the “Guide” section by selecting “Filter,” clicking the “Watch Now” box, and then applying the filter. For more information, check out Verizon’s support page about TV Everywhere

Can I use a streaming media player to watch Xfinity or Verizon content?

The Xfinity and Verizon streaming apps for media devices such as Rokus will not work; these are meant for home use only. But you can connect a computer or mobile device to a TV via an HDMI cable or stream wirelessly to devices like Chromecast or AppleTV.

What if my cable providers says a channel isn’t available to stream outside of my home network?

If you find that a channel can’t be accessed using your home cable TV provider’s streaming service, you may be able to access live streams directly from the content provider. NESN, ESPN, Fox Sports, and CNN are all examples of content providers who have ways to stream live TV via the web or an app. For more information,  check out the list provided by Xfinity or visit the sites of the following popular channels.

What other options are there for live TV?

There are many live TV subscription services, all of which would work well on Stonehill’s network. Though it lacks some popular channels like CNN, FuboTV provides access to the widest variety of sports programming, in addition to access to local channels and a wide array of entertainment and news options. If NESN isn’t a must, YouTube TV and Hulu Live TV are good options for local channels, news, and entertainment programming. SlingTV and Philo are good budget options that provide a smaller range of channels.
