Connecting Game Consoles & Media Players to the Network

Wired or wireless

Media players and gaming consoles can be connected to either the wired or wireless network to gain access to the Internet. If available, a wired (Ethernet) connection is recommended, as wired connections provide the best connection speed and stability. Every residence hall room has wall plates with Ethernet network jacks in them.  You will need an Ethernet cable to plug into the wall plate jack. (If you don't have a cable, they are available for sale at the campus Bookstore). In a residence hall room, the blue Ethernet jack on the left should be active; if not, try the blue Ethernet jack on the right.  If neither works, please contact the Service Desk.

If your device doesn't have an Ethernet jack (or a dongle for one), wireless connections are still possible - just keep in mind that most of these types of devices are designed for use in home networks, and very often cannot connect to hillspot wireless due to incompatibility with hillspot's enterprise-grade security protocols. Therefore, if a device is wireless only, it should be connected to the guest Wi-Fi network instead.

Registering a Gaming Console or Media player device for wired connection

For a gaming or streaming media device to work over a wired connection, it needs to be registered. (If you are trying to connect a computer please use the authentication instructions for Mac OS or Windows OS Computer Authentication instructions) You need your device's physical (MAC) address for the Ethernet connection to begin the registration process. It should be a set of six 2-digit pairs, separated by colons or dashes (i.e. FH:12:G1:5C:E3:47). Instructions to find your MAC address are located at the bottom of this article. If your device is not listed below, please refer to the manufacturer's instructions to find your device's MAC address.

If you already have your MAC address:

Follow the steps below to register your gaming console or media player with the Stonehill network. 

1. Make sure you are on a computer, phone, or tablet connected to the campus network so that you can access the registration website (use hillspot if on Wi-Fi).
2. Open a web browser and browse to https://scauth.stonehill.edu
3. Click on the STONEHILL COLLEGE GAMING CONSOLE AND MEDIA DEVICE REGISTRATION PAGE hyperlink.
   
4. On the Device Registration page, enter your Stonehill username and password and click the Log In button.
   
    
5. Click on the Create Device link on the left side. 
   
    
6. Complete the required fields (MAC address, Device Name, Device type and terms of use) and then click the Create button.
   
7. Your device is now registered to the connected Ethernet port.

If you correctly entered the required information, you will be prompted with a message that says Device successfully registered. Please plug your device into the Ethernet port at this time, and you should receive full connectivity. If not, try rebooting your device, as this is sometimes necessary on some devices.

To find your MAC address:

Xbox ONE

1. Go to My Xbox in the Xbox Dashboard and select Settings.
2. In the Settings pane, select Network.
3. Select Advanced Settings from the Network Settings tab.
4. At the bottom of this screen you'll see a heading called Wired MAC.

Xbox 360

1. Go to the system area of the Xbox dashboard, select Network Settings.
2. Select Edit Settings.
3. Under Basic Settings make sure the IP settings are on Automatic.
4. Go to Additional Settings then select Advanced Settings.
5. At the bottom of this screen you'll see your wired MAC address.

Playstation 4

1. Start up your PlayStation 4 without a disk in the drive.
2. Find the System Settings icon and select the X.
3. Click System Information and press the X. 
4. Your Mac Address will display.

Playstation 3

1. On the main menu, select Settings.
2. Select System Settings.
3. Select System Information.
4. Your MAC address will be displayed on the screen.

Roku Player/TV

1. On the back on your Roku there are a pair of six 2-digit pairs separated by colons, e.g. 00:0D:0A:1H:3G:5C. One set is for the Ethernet connector and for the other for the wireless connector.
2. Alternatively, from the Roku home screen, select Settings > Network > locate the value next to "Wireless MAC Address."

Chromecast

1. Open the Chromecast app on your computer. If you have set up your Chromecast recently, you'll find a shortcut to the app on your desktop. Otherwise, Windows users should check the Start Menu, and Mac users should check Applications.
2. Click Settings, and the MAC Address will be at the bottom of the window.

Fire Stick/TV

1. From the Main Menu go to Settings.
2. Select System.
3. Go to About.
4. Toggle down to Network.
5. Look for the MAC Address (LAN).

Apple TV

1. With your Apple TV remote, navigate to the Settings icon and select it.
2. From the Settings menu, select General.
3. Under General, select Network.
4. Your MAC Address will be next to Ethernet Address to connected to the internet via the wired connection.
